In 1943, 1st Polish Army was formed near Zytomierz in the Soviet Union as 1st Polish Army in USSR.It was formed from personnel from 1st Polish Army Corps in USSR and Polish citizens leaving in formerEastern provinces under Soviet control. After the 1st Polish Army crossed river Bug in 1944, it wasjoined by AL (Armia Ludowa – People’s Army) and renamed as Polish People’s Army (LWP). Polish People’s Army foughtalongside the Soviets liberating Poland and ending the war in Berlin in May of 1945.

  • Equipped 1st and 16th Armored Brigade (Armor Regiments).
  • Equipped 4th and 5th Heavy Tank Regiment.
  •  

    Soviet KV-1 heavy tank

  • Used in small numbers for training.
  •  

    Soviet IS-1 / IS-2 heavy tank

  • Equipped 4th and 5th Heavy Tank Regiment.
  •  

    Also used in small numbers were Sherman and Valentine tanks along with SU-57 tank destroyers.


    Self-Propelled Guns


    Soviet SU-76 / SU-76M self-propelled gun

  • Equipped 13th and 27th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment.
  •  

    Soviet SU-85 self-propelled gun

  • Equipped 13th and 27th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment.
  •  

    Soviet SU-100 self-propelled gun

  • Used in small numbers.
  •  

    Soviet SU-152 self-propelled gun

  • Used in small numbers.
  •  

    Soviet ISU-122 self-propelled gun

  • Used in small numbers.
  •  

    Soviet ISU-152 self-propelled gun

  • Equipped 13th and 27th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment.

    Armored Cars


    Soviet BA-20 armored car

  • Used for short period of time.
  •  

    Soviet BA-64 armored car

  • Equipped 1st and 2nd Army WP.


    Often captured German equipment including AFVs, trucks, cars etc. was pressed into service.
